Course Title: Haunted and Held: Theologies of Place
Instructor: Dr. Ryan Turnbull
Time: Tuesday evenings, Winter 2025
Location: St. Margaret's Anglican Church, 160 Ethelbert St
Description:
Pope Francis once wrote, "the history of our friendship with God is always linked to particular places." In this course, we will explore the breadth of Christian theologies of place. The first half of this class takes a historical view of the theological and philosophical debates around questions of space and place in Christian theology. The second half engages with various contemporary critical questions in theological place studies, particularly around questions of decolonization, just use of land and property, and the question of cyberspace. This is an in-person class at St. Margaret's Anglican church and will involve occasional excursions beyond the classroom to experience "place" in a variety of embodied ways.
Course Title: Reading Christian Scripture
Instructor: Nate Wall-Bowering
Time: Mondays from 6:00 - 8:45 pm
Location: St. John's College, 92 Dysart Road (Room 201) and online
Description:
This course trains students to be conversant with Christian Scripture. Throughout the course students will be introduced to the historical dimensions of biblical literature as understood with modern scholarship. The course will focus, however, on the Bible’s ongoing role as a sacred text within the life of the Christian churches and on the skills required to interpret the Bible credibly, critically and imaginatively. To that end, students will learn key hermeneutical skills, take up select critical frameworks, and practice raising a variety of theological, ethical, and political questions as readers of Christian Scripture.
